When we moved into our house I was very excited to find an orange tree in our backyard. The first season the oranges were sour like lemons. Last year they had absolutely no flavour (they made great marmalade though). This year they are sweet and juicy and every single one has a worm in it.... grrrrrr!
A while ago I had Googled and found various natural recipes for pesticides that you can make at home. One of the most obvious answers is garlic. Pests are repelled by the odor of the sulphur compounds in garlic.I crushed 2 cloves of garlic and steeped it in water over night.
It's already too late to save the fruit this season, but I figured we could start treating the tree now.
The smell was overpowering but didn't seem to bother Lexi at all.
Shortly after we came back inside the birds arrived. We laughed as the birds came to investigate but wouldn't get near the tree. This little Cape Robin was the bravest of the lot and even he didn't sit there for very long.
In case you have a similar problem with citrus trees, I found this great guide to treating orange trees on Garden Guides.
Happy gardening!
Candice & Lexi
